Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

Teachers: Mrs Owston and Mrs Cleary

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Smith

We have a really exciting half term ahead of us! In English we will be writing our own poetry (check out https://www.michaelrosen.co.uk/ he’s one of my all-time favourite poets and writers) and writing an explanation text all about chocolate (also one of my all-time favourite things!)

We will be continuing our Science topic of Living Things and their Habitats and will hopefully get chance to build some bug hotels and plant some wild flowers to encourage a whole host of bees and insects to the grounds.

Our RE work will focus on Lent and Easter and we will be thinking about how we can help those less fortunate than ourselves and also to be mindful and appreciative of all that we have.

Maths work will include Multiplication and Division, Fractions and Length and Height. Please practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables with your children. (Others would be great if the children are eager to have a go!)

In Geography we will be comparing the UK and Mexico. Mrs. Owston will be trying her best to persuade Mrs Hoyle to allow her to take the class on a school trip to Mexico. (Wishful thinking!)

In Computing we will be completing our PowerPoint presentations and collecting data about bugs to input into a data collection programme.

PE takes place on Monday and Tuesday. Please ensure that you always have the correct kit in school and that it is clearly named. It makes it much easier to match it up with its owner in the event of anything getting lost.

Please remember that the children must remove earrings and watches for their own safety on PE days.

Reading is an extremely important life skill and a really enjoyable activity. I hear each child read weekly in class and also during Guided Reading sessions. It is very important that the children read aloud at home to an adult as regularly as possible. Please record their reading in the reading diaries. Children also gain incredibly from being read to, so don’t be afraid to continue with bedtime stories. In fact, I encourage it!

Homework is set on Friday and is to be returned, completed by the following Wednesday. Please assist your child with anything they need help with and ensure that their spelling is accurate and their presentation good. The spelling test takes place on Friday and supports the spelling work we do weekly in class.
