Summer Term Week 1 (20.04.20)

Welcome back Year 4! I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break, I look forward to hearing all about it! I hope you are all excited to get back to learning, we have some brand new topics to get started with, I hope you enjoy them!

Some of our new topics will include: WW2, Russia, States of Matter, Mark making in Art and packaging in DT!

Current dojo log in code: MGR PRM

Suggested afternoon activities

Please remember, these are suggested activities that link to what we would be doing in school. I know that it is not always possible for children to complete all of the activities below due to home learning restrictions, work hours etc. Please do not feel like all of the below activities must be completed and sent to me, they are ideas for extras.

  • If we were back in school, our new History topic would be WW2! This week I would like you to research what the main dates were during World War 2 and create your own timeline. Some of the dates I would like you to find are: The start of WW2, The end of WW2, The Battle of Britain, The Blitz, D-Day, VE Day, The Battle of Dunkirk, and any other interesting dates you find! Remember they should be in chronological order, this means in date order. I will attached a timeline template below the activities for support.
  • Art - Research Emma Bridgewater pottery. What sort of designs do you tend to find? What sort of things do they make? Can you find a picture of your favourite piece of pottery and write what you like about it and why around the image?
  • What did you do over the Easter holidays? I would love to hear about your break! You could create a photo collage, write a recount or a diary and post it in class dojo or email it to me.
  • If we were at school, in Geography we would have been starting a new topic on Russia! This week, I would like you to find out the following information: What continent is Russia part of? What countries boarder Russia? What is the population of Russia? What is the most popular religion in Russia? What language is spoken? Who runs the country? You may wish to create a power point, record it in note form, create a poster, the choice is yours! Please send this to me on either class dojo or email.
  • Our new Science topic is States of Matter. Find out what a solid, liquid and gas are and write a definition for each. Can you then come up with examples for each? I have attached a worksheet below that you can use, you may wish to draw your own version. Please send your work to me on class dojo or email.

It would be lovely to share pictures of any work you do on this page for others to have a look at! Please send me pictures via email that you would like shared on the class page.

You can click these sections on class dojo to add your child's work they have completed.

English - Today we are starting our new English unit! We are going to be looking at the Little Shoe Maker.

Please click the link and watch the video to begin with: http://www.literacyshed.com/littleshoemaker.html

The first task I would like you to compelte for our new unit, is to describe the shoe maker and his shop. To do this you should use a variety of language features such as similes, expanded noun phrases, metaphors, alliteration etc. I will set this as a task on purple mash, but you could write it yourself and send me a picture of your work via email or class dojo! Please remember that this is a piece of English work, it shouldn't be only a few sentences long. I should see a couple of paragraphs!

Maths - UPDATE: If you are having issues accessing the video via the link below, please try this: https://www.facebook.com/groups/WRMY4/?source_id=832938810100604 They are having issues today with their website and the amount of people trying to access it. All videos will be uploaded onto this facebook group by white rose daily.

The link below will take you to the maths work for this week. Today please watch the video for lesson 1 - Make a whole. Children have done lots of work on fractions and are very good at using objects to show their fractions! Maybe you could use some lego or building bricks to help you like we would do in class with the multi link cubes!

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/

Below I have attached the work sheet and the answers. Work can be done either on the sheet or in your maths book. Please them email me your work or upload a photo of it onto class dojo!

I have also set a 'make a whole' task on purple mash for children to consolidate the above learning.

Please still check purple mash as your child's work may be slightly different and set on there, to suit them and their learning.

English - Please watch the link again for the little shoe maker to remind yourself of the video http://www.literacyshed.com/littleshoemaker.html. Today, I would like you to re-tell the story in the style of a fairy tale. You can use fronted adverbials such as 'Once upon a time,' to help you. Lots of fairy tales have magic in them. Do you think you could make it sound more magical? The shoes in the video move, how could this be possible? Think about your description when you are writing this. You could imagine that you are writing it for a young child, maybe a brother or sister! Think about what would make it exciting for them. I can't wait to read them! You can type it up and email it, write it in your English book and email me a picture, or I will put a template on purple mash that you could use.

Maths - Please use the link as you did yesterday for todays video on decimals. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/ alternate link if white rose is not working: https://www.facebook.com/groups/WRMY4/?source_id=832938810100604

Today the children are looking at writing decimals. I have attached below a place value grid which may be helpful for this. Children have used these place value grids in school before with counters, I have even used them before using smarties! Watch the help video carefully and then have a go at the questions which I have uploaded below. I have also uploaded the answers for parents. Remember your place value when doing this!

Please still check purple mash as your child's work may be slightly different and set on there, to suit them and their learning.

English - http://www.literacyshed.com/littleshoemaker.html

Today, I would like you to try and use the show not tell technique in your writing. This is describing to the reader what is going on, without telling them exactly. You will need to use similes, metaphors and lots of description for this. You need to describe the shoes coming alive to your reader, without actually telling them the shoes are alive! You could say:

The shoes danced around the room like a ballerina, gracefully making their way around the shop. They glistened in the sunlight and caught the eye of all of the others around them.

I haven't told the reader the shoes are alive, however I have compared them to a human moving around. I should see at least two paragraphs for this, you may choose to do a paragraph on one shoe and then your second paragraph on different shoes. You can email this to me, upload it on dojo, or on purple mash where I will set a template for you to use. I look forward to reading your writing!

Maths - Please watch today's video for lesson 3 on the link for white rose https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/.

Today the children will be comparing decimals. Their place value grid may be of use again, so I will upload it again below along with the work and answers. You can do this in your maths book and email it to me, you could send me a picture on dojo too, I have set up a folder for today's work on there.

Please still check purple mash as your child's work may be slightly different and set on there, to suit them and their learning.

Thursday

English - http://www.literacyshed.com/littleshoemaker.html

Today, I would like you to describe the rival shoe maker using specific language to make him sound sly and cunning. You could use similes to compare him to an animal, such as a fox, which could be described as sly or cunning! You may choose to also use features such as metaphors, expanded noun phrases and alliteration. If you have forgotten what these are, then have a look at the pictures under Monday's task, these will give you some examples.

You can email this to me, upload it on dojo, or on purple mash where I will set a template for you to use. As you are describing a character, I would like to see at least two paragraphs for this piece of work please. I look forward to reading your writing!

Maths -

Today the children will be ordering decimals. When ordering decimals, remember to look at the digits in each place value box.

For example if we have the decimals 0.36 and 0.3, the bigger one is 0.36 because it has a digit in the hundredths column. You could write 0.3 as 0.30 so as the children can relate them to the numbers 36 and 30, which they already know.

Friday

English - Today, I would like you to come up with some speech between the Little Shoe Maker and his rival! Remember, if you use too much speech, then the story of what is happening will be lost. You need to explain what is going on, as well as using speech. All punctuation needs to be inside the inverted commas and you should use a new line for a new speaker. Some ideas of speech could be the Little Shoe Maker asking him what he is doing there, asking him to leave or maybe they could have a disagreement! The choice is yours. Try and write about 2 paragraphs if you can, to make sure that the story is being told as well as the speech being written. I will put a blank template onto purple mash for you to use if you wish, or you can write it in your book / type it on the computer and email it to me or add it onto the section for today's work on class dojo. I look forward to reading your writing!

Maths -

For maths today, we are doing some more ordering of decimals. Today, I have uploaded one of our class room secrets power points and work sheets for you to look at. We do alot of these in class, so children are very used to the power point and sheet layout. Read through the slides and discuss with your parents/family/siblings, then check to see if you were right on the next slide!

Today it is problem solving, so this means you may have to give reasoning for your answers. Remember year 4, like I always say in class, "Yes because he is right." is not a proper problem solving answer! I should see answers such as "Yes he is right because the tenths are bigger in the second number." You must explain to me how you know.

You can upload this onto class dojo or email it to me, the choice is yours.

Please still check purple mash as your child may have a different activity to do, based on what I feel is best for them.

I have also uploaded the answers below for you!
